Museum of Children's Arts (MOCHA) The Museum of Children’s Art (MOCHA): The Museum of Children’s Art operates a children’s art museum in downtown Oakland, CA. and provides educational outreach programs in the schools and libraires in the East Bay community. The mission of MOCHA is to ensure that the arts are a fundamental part of our community and to create opportunities in order for all children to experience the arts to develop creativity, promote a sense of belonging, and to realize their potential. This position is for a temporary part-time and/or full-time visual Teaching Artist (TA) for youth ages TK-12th grade. The TA will teach visual art to students in the Museum space and at off-site locations in Alameda County and/or West Contract Costa County. 10-35 hours weekly dependent on TA’s availability and program schedule. MOCHA TA’s provide hands-on arts instruction in a range of settings. They are assigned placements based on scheduling, experience, and interest. The above artists work in the following settings: In-School Residency: Features sequential hands-on arts education in classrooms during the school day. MOCHA Artists work with classroom teachers to determine content, which can be designed to support core curriculum and align with California State Standards. After-school Residency: Teaching Artists provide hands-on art activities during after-school hours and create their own curricula in partnership with MOCHA and the after-school program site staff. Field Trips: Artists lead classrooms and after-school groups in interactive art lessons and provide an introduction to the Museum. Special Events/Community Programs: MOCHA Artists provide hands-on activities for families at community events. Position Responsibilities: Program Planning. In collaboration with classroom teachers, design arts education lessons that relate to classroom curriculum or other themes prioritized by classroom teachers. Working with MOCHA staff, develop contextual and age-appropriate hands-on arts education lessons. Coordinate with MOCHA staff to obtain supplies and maintain a responsibility to museum facility and art supplies. Art Instruction. Deliver 60-to-90-minute lessons that include discussion, hands-on art lesson, student-assisted clean-up and closing discussion/reflection for youth ranging in age from pre-K to 12th grade youth who are from a variety of backgrounds including students with special needs and children with English as a second language. TA’s will use multidisciplinary and engaging ways to begin a new unit of study or lesson while building on students’ prior knowledge and experiences. Meetings & Trainings. Attend all required meetings and training sessions at the Museum. Evaluations & Reports. Complete all necessary evaluations and reports, including standard MOCHA evaluations and any additional evaluations/forms required or grant-funded programs. Qualifications: Experience providing hands-on arts education to youth. Ability to demonstrate, engage, challenge and interest youth through the arts. Experience designing and implementing developmentally appropriate art curriculum. Knowledge of youth development and arts education principles and practices. Ability to create safe, inclusive, supportive, and creative environments for children, youth, classroom teachers & families. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities, plan ahead, anticipate and articulate program needs, and work independently. Ability to problem-solve, be flexible, and imaginative. A sense of humor and excellent communication skills. Ability to provide own transportation or utilize public transportation to and from partner sites. Bilingual is a plus. Rate of Pay: DOE, range 18.00 to 50.00 an hour, TA’s may be assigned to work during the school day, after-school, and/or on weekends and evenings.
