About Project Commotion Project Commotion's Mission is to foster healthy development in children of all abilities through purposeful movement, play, and family and community relationships. We partner with families and support educators in understanding the critical value of integrating quality movement experiences in daily life. About Las Luciérnagas Las Luciérnagas (LL) is the Early Childhood Program of Project Commotion. We are a play-based and movement-centered program that offers a bi-lingual Spanish/English curricula. Our Core Values are centered on Empathy, Equity, Movement & Play, and Connection to Nature, Language & Culture. At LL, we approach each child as an individual and commit to responding to their needs in a careful and responsive way. The program is set up to facilitate small group and individual play choices in a developmentally appropriate environment. We prioritize whole-child development, utilizing intentional physical and sensory-motor experiences as a tool for supporting social and emotional growth. LL is small by design (12 children) with a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:4. Our program runs from 8:30am - 3pm, from mid-August through the end of June. Our brick-and-mortar space, located in the Mission District, includes a classroom, movement studio, and patio space. We have a deeply committed team who work in collaboration with Project Commotion administrative and our fellow program staff who deliver movement classes and movement education for children, families and teachers. Staff participate in team meetings, receive professional development support throughout the year, and are supported by an Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant, provided by Edgewood and a Dual Language Teaching Coach provided by First5. Our teachers and administrative staff engage in active movement with children on the floor, and are invited to be active players and learners who intentionally support children’s physical learning through a developmentally-appropriate lens.
Las Luciérnagas is hiring an Assistant Teacher The LL Assistant Teacher partners with/supports the Head Teacher and teaching team in implementing PC's early childhood program. The position reports directly to the LL Site Supervisor. The pending start date for this position is September 20, 2021. Hours: P/T 24 - 27 hours per week, Monday - Thursday 10am - 4pm, with additional hours for staff training, meetings, scheduled according to center's needs. This position is projected increase to full-time 35 - 40 hours per week in August 2022.
Requirements: • Minimum 6 Units of ECE + Assistant Teacher Permit from Commission on Teacher Credentialing required + currently enrolled in at least 6 units of ECE. • Bilingual/Biliterate in Spanish, as well as Spanish Immersion teaching experience. • Passion for and experience with child-centered learning. • Positive attitude, creativity and strong commitment to supporting children's development • Strong collaboration skills and commitment to working with a team, as well as ability to take initiative and work independently. • Commitment to continuous improvement, learning and growth. • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. • Ability to multi-task in an active and often noisy environment. • Must be 18 years or older. • Pass physical exam, TB test, Criminal Record Clearance and Fingerprints and all other state license requirements. Preferred: • 12 units or more in ECE and Associate Teacher permit or higher. • AA or higher in Child Development. • Experience planning and executing creative child-directed activities and/or projects. • Experience in fostering social and emotional capabilities. Physical Requirements: Movement development is central to the work that we do at Project Commotion/Las Luciérnagas. Strong candidates will be open to physical exploration and activities and may have a background in one or more movement arts. Additionally, the physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job: - Ability to sit/stand both in/outdoors for prolonged periods. - Ability to participate in regular standing, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, crouching, grasping, reaching above, and below the shoulder. - Ability to lift/carry 25 lbs. - Ability to move large studio equipment including gymnastics/tumbling equipment. Responsibilities: • Build and maintain responsive, nurturing and individualized relationships with children; establish and maintain effective, working relationships with parents and staff. • Assist Head Teacher with set up and breakdown of classroom, outside space and movement studio. Please note: this position does require the ability to lift/move heavy equipment. • Lead group activities at times when the Head Teacher is providing individual care to children or parents. • Supervise and support children in using movement and gym equipment safely. (Training will be provided). • Assist Head Teacher in identifying themes relevant to children and planning activities and projects around those themes. • Prepare and serve snack. • Help with diaper changing as needed. • Supervise children on off-site activities and field trips. • Maintain and support program policies and procedures. • Attend weekly staff meetings, bi-monthly professional development trainings, yearly weekend 2-day training sessions and staff retreats annually or bi-annually (1-2 overnights). COVID-19 considerations: We are dedicated to keeping our community safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and are closely following all guidelines and requirements from the CDC and SF Department of Public Health. The Site Supervisor will communicate closely with ED, teaching staff and families to support the implementation of health and safety protocols. If physical programs are interrupted by health and safety requirements, staff will pivot to providing virtual services from home and continue family support to the best of our ability.
